About Aileen

Almost 20 years ago I became a freelance journalist out of a desire to be a voice for the voiceless. After volunteering to write for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, I became aware of the demand for freelance writers.

I discovered that whether it’s writing in advocacy of the individual, or content for business, it boils down to the same thing – helping to get a much needed story out to the public.

Having developed my story-telling skills writing feature stories for The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and National Post, more recently I’ve taken training in writing web content for businesses through the American Writers and Artists Institute (AWAI). I’m also a proud member of the Professional Writers Alliance.

To date, I’ve written some web content, blogs, video scripts and speeches. Although I’ve been trained in all forms of thought content, the journalist in me is drawn toward case studies and white papers because they require extensive research and interviews.

Under-girding my copy-writing is a depth of insight garnered from experiences of living in the wilderness of the Yukon to the crowded city of Nairobi, Kenya. I am now based in Toronto, Ontario, where I taught and wrote a curriculum for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities.

This is also where I had my first inkling for journalism after doing a rough documentary on the said students, entitled, “We Don’t Do the Killings.” The title is a direct quote that comes from the astute observation of one of the students.

With an openness to things that are life-giving, several opportunities for writing have come my way. When not writing with a communication strategy in mind, in my spare time, I’ve had the opportunity to write for the small stage and the big screen.
